Moeraki Boulders located on Koekohe Beach, New Zealand. Formed by the sea floor from sedimentary deposits in the same way a pearl will form around a particle of sand. Some of the larger boulders weigh several tons. Maori legend correlates their origin to the arrival of the first ancestors that came on the Araiteuru canoe which sank by nearby Matakae. The Maoris say that some of the surviving crew were turned into stone and became mountains.
